Chapter Six

It wasn’t much later when Jenner opened the front door to find Leo and Taruk standing there in the snow. Leo gave him an assessing look and then appeared to be waiting for something.

“Hi,” Jenner said.

Leo nodded to him. “Hello.”

Jenner wasn’t sure what Leo was waiting for. He had plenty of room to come in and Jenner was waving for them to do so. But still Leo refused to move. He lifted his eyebrows and finally sighed. “Cam was right. You really don’t know anything. Do you?”

“Have a little more respect, he’s my best friend,” Taruk spoke up from behind him. He tried to move past Leo, since he was only blocking part of the entrance, but Leo threw his arm out to stop Taruk from taking a step inside the house.

“Cam! Tell your mate what to say when there are guests at your door who you both want to come inside,” Leo shouted into the house, making Jenner wish, again, that there weren’t so many rules that these two seemed to feel like following.

Jenner looked to the top of the stairs where Cam peeked out from behind the bedroom door where he’d been waiting to get some of his clothes from Leo. “He doesn’t know the words and you know I can’t just tell him. That’s not how this works. Come in and pretend he said them, I guess.”

“I can’t do that and you know it. This is your mated house. If he doesn’t know them, then you have to come down,” Leo argued with him.

“I’m in a towel!” Cam shot back.

“I’ve seen you naked before!”

Jenner laughed at their exchange, though he wished Leo would just come in. He was about to start arguing with him when Cam came down the stairs with his hand clamped tightly around the opening of the towel so that it wouldn’t slip and expose him to Taruk.

Once he was in front of them Cam gave a little bow. “Welcomed friends, please won’t you join us in our mated house and share in the bounty of our mating?”

With a snort Leo came into the house. “Yes, thank you, my mated friend. I feel most welcome in your mated house.”

Jenner shared a look with Taruk. “If you’re expecting anything close to that then you’re going to have to wait in the car.”

Taruk laughed and came in as well. “You two seriously have to do that? And don’t you dare tell me it’s done every time we come over.”

Jenner hoped it wasn’t as well. “I’m not doing it. Whatever the words are that Taruk and Leo need to hear so they know they’re always welcome here, pretend I said them and let’s be done with it.”

Cam gave him a smile. “Someday you might find a mated ritual you actually like.” He and Leo began taking his bags up the staircase.

“I doubt it!” Jenner called up to him. He closed the door behind Taruk and his friend tossed his jacket onto the couch.

“Don’t tell me that’s how this has gone so far.
